Finding your Rest

So often in our lives, we believe we can “fix” ourselves. Things start to go bad. Habits, hang-ups, and addictions control us and we try to lean on our own capabilities to fix it. We go into damage control mode and things very often go from bad to worse. Relationships fall apart, addictions spiral out of control; we lose our jobs, and maybe even our health. We find no peace, no joy and no rest. We are tired and worn out from just trying to survive! In short, Sabbath doesn’t exist for us.

Sabbath can mean many things. Quite simply it means to stop or to cease activity, mainly physical labor. In the Old Testament, it referred to the day of rest God took after creation and the Israelites deliverance from Egypt. Both pointed to the coming Savior who would give mankind a rest from their labors in trying to make themselves acceptable to God. It lovingly signifies our unique relationship with God in which we rest in him.

Psalm 46:10 says “Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth”.

  • God wants us to cease our labor, to rest, to listen, and wait quietly on Him. He wants us to cease trying to “fix” ourselves. When we do this anxiety, fear, and doubt melt away. God will take care of our hurts, habits, and hang-ups if we allow Him to. We can find true deliverance from our problems and rest from our labor with God’s help.

Finding Sabbath in God means we give up our worries, fears, and anxiety and enter into His rest. We look to Him as our source of peace.

1st Peter 5:7 “Cast your anxiety on Him because He cares for you”.
  • At times we feel like we are overcome by our struggles. At times we feel that all our best efforts have failed to provide relief from our problems. It’s at those times peace and rest elude us. Peter is telling us we may look to Him for strength. We may look to Him to give us peace. We can find Sabbath rest in the Lord if we turn our troubles over to Him. God will bring us relief from our hurts, habits, and hang-ups if we allow Him to be in control. Turning it over to Him provides rest from our own pitiful efforts to fix ourselves. It can’t be done without God’s intervention.

Matt 11:28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

Are you tired from the effort of trying to “fix” yourself? Have you grown weary fighting your problems? Do you long for peace and Sabbath rest in God? Turn your problems over to Him. Allow Him to be in control. Trust that God will provide peace, relief and rest. You will see the miracle of God’s divine intervention. God is calling you to His rest with these words: “Just be still and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10a.
