Stolen Identity

By Susan Nichols, Fellowship Bible Church CR Devotional Team 7/25/2018

I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called--his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.”  (Eph. 1:18, NLT)

Have you ever been a victim of identity theft?  That’s when someone uses your personal information without your permission to gain some benefit for themselves.  A friend of mine recently had someone charge hundreds of dollars to his credit card.  He had to fight to clear his name and get his money back.  What would you do if someone took out loans in your name?  Or used your social security number to get a copy of your birth certificate? Would you let them take money out of your bank account?  Would you let them steal your identity?  I think you’d do whatever it took to protect your name and keep the identity thief from ruining your life.
Now the question becomes this:  If you’d do whatever it took to protect your name and good credit, then why give in so easily to a spiritual enemy who tries to steal your identity in Christ?  Bring to mind for one moment the lies the enemy has spoken to you personally.
Now know this…the one who has repeatedly spoken those things to your heart is the father of lies and there is no truth in him (John 8:44).  Those whispers seem to be true because you’ve believed them for so long, but his words are meaningless because JESUS said He came to give us abundant life (John 10:10).  The enemy steals that abundant life when you believe his lies about who you are.
What does he gain by stealing your identity?  He hinders the work of God in your life and keeps you from ministering effectively for God.  He is a fruit-stealer, climbing over the fence to take what doesn’t belong to him.  The truth is that you are a new creation—the old has gone, the new has come! (2 Cor. 5:17).  When you asked Christ into your life, you were adopted by the Most High God.  You’re no longer an orphan in this world.  No!  Instead, you are treasured beyond belief!  You are valued beyond comprehension!

  • We are His rich and glorious inheritance (Eph. 1:18)
  • We are raised up and seated with Christ (Eph. 2:4-7)
  • We are free (Rom 6:22)
  • We are loved (John 3:16)
  • We are chosen by the God who created the universe! (Eph. 1:4)
Begin TODAY to protect and defend your identity by rejecting the lies and, instead, believing what God says about you!

Dear Lord,                                                                                                                                             Please forgive me for believing the enemy’s lies when you’ve so clearly told me in your Word who I am and how valuable I am to you.  Please show me the lies I haven’t seen yet. Help me to be active—not passive—in the fight to claim my identity in you.  Be my shield when the deceiver is trying to knock down the doors to my mind.  With your help, I will conquer lies with the truth!  Thank you for being my protection.  Most of all, thank you for letting me know that I am loved, valuable, and chosen by you!                    ~~Amen!
