Finding the Rhythm

By Carl Kimbro, Fellowship Bible Church Celebrate Recovery Devotional Team 7/18/18

Things are going great. Family life couldn’t be better. Bible study, fellowship with Christian friends and our relationship with God are at their best. Our hurts, habits, and hang-ups have been turned over to God. Then suddenly, the rhythms of life change when you least expect it. Everything spirals out of control. Chaos reigns and it seems hopeless.

When this happens we can get off track and stopped trusting God. We go into fix-it mode. Maybe we pray about it, but we tell God how we want it fixed and go down the path of making it work out that way. We may even just give up and fall back on destructive habits. In short, our life can become unmanageable. We feel alone, hopeless, and abandoned by God. And the more we try to fix it ourselves, the worse it gets.

When the Israelites were trapped between the Red Sea and the Egyptian army, God gave them 1 simple command in Exodus 14:14
"The Lord will fight for you, and you only have to be silent."
God is telling us to leave it to Him, be silent and watch the works He will do for us. He alone can defeat or hurts, habits, and hang-ups. He alone can restore our rhythms of life and our relationship with Him.  When we are at our darkest point, we cry out to God for help and mercy. We confess our need and tell God we are tired, worn out, and can’t go on like this. We begin to (or maybe once again) turn it over to God and put our trust in Him. That’s when things begin to change.

When we turn it over to God, Isaiah 41:13 best describes the change in our lives as we feel God’s presence in all of this:
"I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand
and says to you, do not fear, I will help you."
That promise becomes real. People come into our lives that had walked through what we
are walking through and mentor us. When we stop trying to fix it ourselves and let God fix it, we find He alone restores the rhythms of life.

In summary, we try to fix it on our own because think we can. But any fix that doesn’t trust in God and put Him in control won’t work. He isn’t going to do what’s our will but what’s His. The words of the song “Trust in You” by Lauren Daigle help me to put into perspective the need to always trust in God’s plan. If you want the words of Isaiah 41:13 to be real in your life, then listen to the words of this song and let it’s words encourage you to stop trying to fix things and influence the outcome. Instead, put your trust in God and allow him to restore the rhythms of life for you.
